Application Process

Thank you for showing interest in Heinrich International School-Bremen (HISB). We look forward to getting to know your family, answering your questions about our school, and supporting you during the Admissions process.

HISB can accommodate about 1400 students and is a truly International School with over 100 nationalities and more than 90 different native languages represented amongst our student body.

HISB primarily caters to students whose parents are employed by international organizations or who belong to the Diplomatic and International Business community in Bremen. Located in Bremen, our school is easily accessible by public transport and about 15 minutes away from the city center.

Before starting an online application, please get in touch with us via our inquiry form, and we will arrange a virtual meeting so we can ensure to answer any questions you might have. We also encourage you to take a look at our virtual tour, and if you are coming to Bremen, we would be delighted to receive you and your family in person for a tour of our school campus.

What do I need in order to make an online application?

Application Process Steps

  1. Submit an inquiry form: Create an account and complete an online inquiry form.
  2. Virtual Meet and/or School Tour: Once received, we will reach out to you to arrange a virtual meeting or a school tour.
  3. Submit the Application: Complete the online application and pay the one-time, non-refundable application fee via credit card.
  4. Complete an English Assessment: Students applying for Grades 9 to 12 must demonstrate sufficient English language proficiency. The school reserves the right to request a written sample or an interview.
  5. Internal Review & Waitlisted: We start the internal reviewing process. Once approved, we will waitlist your child according to our Admissions Policy.
  6. Receive Admissions Decision: When a place is available, an offer will be extended by email. Acceptance includes the payment of the admission fee within the given deadline.

Admissions Timelines

Academic Year 2025-2026

HISB has an ongoing admissions process in place. For the academic year 2025-2026, we still have places available in the lower Primary School grade levels: Grade Primary, Grade 1, and Grade 2. We maintain waitlists for all other grade levels.

Academic Year 2026-2027

  • January 2025: Applications open.
  • September 2025: Reviewing applications begins.
  • February 2026: First offers sent for ELC, Grade Primary, and Grades 1, 5, and 9.
  • From March 2026: Offers sent for all grade levels where places are available until vacancies are filled.

Academic Year 2027-2028 and beyond

Applications for future academic years will be available approximately 1.5 years in advance. The reviewing process for future academic years will only start in the autumn prior to the start of the applicable academic year.

Admissions Policy & Priority Groups

Heinrich International School-Bremen (HISB) is a non-sectarian, inclusive IB World School meeting the needs of a diverse international community. HISB does not discriminate on the basis of race, gender, language, national origin, sexual orientation, religion, disability or any other characteristic protected by law.

Candidates are placed in different priority groups:

In each of the groups, a special priority is accorded to those children who are applying to re-enter the school (within 2 years) and to those children who have siblings already in the school.

As a non-profit school, all tuition and fees at HISB go back to student learning and making the school a more nurturing and diverse learning community.

Invoicing and Payment Terms

  • Invoices for school fees will be sent for each new school year by 30 June for students who are enroled by that time.
  • Tuition Payments are due in full by 30 August (4 weeks from invoice date) unless you have selected the installment plan option upon enrolment.
  • Installment due dates are 30 August, 30 October, 30 January and 30 March for all students except graduating 12th graders with final installment due on 30 January.

To support you in keeping your account current, you may set up a Direct Debit Authorization or a Standing Payment Order with your bank.

A late payment fee of 15€ will be charged for past due accounts.

Making decisions for your child's future can be a challenge. We accompany our families from the decision making process to the enrolment and beyond. We are giving our best to provide as much information as possible, but if there are still some points on which you are not entirely clear, please do not hesitate to contact our Admissions Office. General Questions

How culturally diverse is the student body?

HISB educates ca. 1,400 students, aged 3-19, from around the world. They represent more than 100 nationalities.

What are the school hours?

Lessons start at 08:30. The academic day in Primary school (ELC, Grade Primary and Grade 1-5) finishes at 14:55 and Secondary school ends at 15:15.

Does HISB have a school uniform?

Our students do not wear school uniforms, as we are encouraging them to live out their individual personalities and exercise freedom of expression.

What grade will my child be placed in?

Candidates for admission at HISB will be placed by age and as suggested by our Placement Policy. Once you have completed an online application for your child at our school you have also indicated the anticipated Grade at entry and the anticipated Start Date.

Does the HISB maintain waiting lists?

Yes, when necessary. As an international school, HISB has a continuous turnover of students. This means that when you apply, our classes may be full and we will open a waiting list according to the HISB Admissions Policy.

Class Size

We have 2 parallel classes in our ELC (16-18 per class), and 3 parallel classes in Grade Primary (20 per class). In Grades 1 to 4 we enroll a maximum of 92 students. In Grade 5 we run 5 parallel classes. Secondary class sizes vary depending on the grade level.

What happens when a new student joins HISB?

Our school organizes a 'New Family Orientation' morning for all new students and parents/guardians before school begins. New students joining during the academic year will participate in an individual orientation.

What do I need in order to make an online application?

When filing an application for admission at HISB through our online system a copy of the following will need to be uploaded: Student identification (passport) and photo, Parent/guardian identification and photo, 2 most recent School reports, and a Credit Card to make the online application fee payment. Additional educational/medical reports may be required if applicable.

Curriculum

What Curriculum does HISB teach?

Heinrich International School-Bremen is an authorised International Baccalaureate school, a programme of international education designed to help students ages 3 to 18 to develop the knowledge, understanding, attitudes and skills necessary to participate actively and responsibly in a changing world.

What languages are taught?

HISB delivers the IB curriculum in English. For students whose native language is not English we offer an extensive English Language Acquisition Programme (ELA). All our students must also study the language of the host country, German. Secondary Students have the opportunity to take French or Spanish as well.

Do students receive English language support?

For students whose native language is not English we offer an extensive English Language Acquisition Programme (ELA). In ELA, our aim is to provide the language support students need to be successful in their academic work as well as in everyday communication.

Does my child require a laptop or other digital device?

Students in ELC & Grade Primary have access to shared school-owned iPad trolleys. Each student in G1 to G4 has access to their own school-owned iPad. Students in G5 to G12 are expected to bring their own laptop device.

Can students who graduate attend German universities?

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB DP) examination is widely accepted for entrance to German Universities, provided certain subject conditions are met according to the KMK (Kultusministerkonferenz) regulations.

Which Universities have HISB Graduates joined in the past?

Our alumni have joined universities all over the world, including highly ranked institutions in the UK, USA, Germany, and globally.

Financial Questions

Does HISB offer financial aid?

We are not able to grant any scholarships or reductions in fees.

Are the application fee and the admission fee refundable?

The Application Fee and the Admissions Fee are both one-time and non-refundable fees. Re-entering and re-applying students must also pay the Application Fee.

Services

How can my child get to and from HISB?

HISB is easily accessible by public transportation in Bremen. Our school bus services or public transportation is recommended as parking around school is difficult.

Does HISB offer a lunch programme?

We offer a high-quality, freshly prepared, and seasonal selection of international meals to help our students' mental and physical performance. The daily menu contains a culinary variety of meals and at least one vegetarian alternative.

Does HISB offer Mother Tongue Classes?

Within our private Mother Tongue programme we offer many mother tongues; these classes are privately taught, and paid for by parents directly.

Does HISB offer After School Activities?

Heinrich International School-Bremen offers a diverse after school activity programme for our students. We are proud to offer a wide assortment of fun academic and sport activities for all abilities and ages.

Does HISB offer After School Care?

HISB offers an After School Care Programme, the Extended Day Programme (EDP), for children from the Early Learning Centre to G5.

Do you offer help for children with learning support needs?

In the event that your child will be in need of Learning Support or Counselling Services at HISB, please read the available information in our LS Handbook. We have a limited capacity for how many students with 1:1 need we can support as a school.
